MSI PI Randall Victora Receives Teaching Award
Professor Randall Victora (Electrical and Computer Engineering) is among the recipients of the 2016 Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Postbaccalaureate, Graduate, and Professional Education. Professor Victora uses MSI for simulations of light propagation and electronic structure calculations of magnetic damping. The goal of the research is to improve designs for storage/memory media.

MSI Researchers Featured by CFANS
Three MSI Principal Investigators are among the faculty members featured in a special report by the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS). The report, Solutions: The Future is Now, is dedicated to work being done by early-career faculty, grad students, and post-docs.
MSI PIs Participate in U Grand Challenge Curriculum
Four of the spring semester’s Grand Challenge courses are being taught by MSI Principal Investigators. The Grand Challenge Curriculum is designed to bring a solution-driven, interdisciplinary approach to learning while addressing global issues.
Improving HIV/AIDS Therapies
MSI Principal Investigator Hideki Aihara and Zhiqi Yin and Ke Shi (both members of the Aihara MSI research group) have published research that may help in the development of anti-retroviral therapies that could improve treatments for HIV and AIDS. The paper, which also has co-authors from Cornell University and St. Louis University, appeared in the February 18 issue of the prestigious journal Nature.
3D Printing
MSI PIs Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari (Pediatrics) and Paul Iaizzo (Surgery; Visible Heart Lab) are featured in a recent story on local tv station KARE-11’s segment, The Next Big Thing. Professors Panoskaltsis-Mortari and Iaizzo discuss the possible future uses of 3D printing in medicine.
Does Occupational Licensing Yield Benefits?
MSI PI Morris Kleiner, a professor in the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in early February concerning occupational licensing. Professor Kleiner studies the effects of such licensure, including whether these licenses improve safety or performance.
David Pui Elected to National Academy of Engineering
MSI PI David Pui (Mechanical Engineering) has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. This is one of the highest professional honors that can be awarded to an engineer. An article about this election appears on the College of Science and Engineering website.
Investigating the Impacts of Fossil Fuels
MSI Principal Investigator Jason Hill (an associate professor in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering) has recently been featured on both Minneapolis’s KARE-11 tv and the University’s Minnesota Daily newspaper. Professor Hill’s research investigates the impact of using fossil fuels.
Microbe Genomes and Potential Medicines
MSI Principal Investigator Mike Smanski, an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry, is featured in the Winter 2016 issue of Minnesota Alumni magazine. Professor Smanski studies microbial genomes to discover genes and pathways that might lead the way to new drugs.
