Studying Bear Hibernation to Help Humans
A story about the research of MSI PI Paul Iaizzo (professor, Surgery; Institute for Engineering in Medicine) appeared recently on the Lake Country Journal website. Professor Iaizzo studies bears and their hibernation. Such research not only benefits the bears themselves by giving wildlife scientists better information with which to manage the state’s bear population, but also can be used to improve healthcare for humans.
Inclusive Authorship
The Nutrient Network, NutNet, is an international research collaboration studying the effect of nutrients on grasslands. They have extensive experience publishing papers with numerous authors. The NutNet group recently published a new framework for writing these papers, a method that reduces barriers to meaningful participation for all authors.
MSI PI Boris Shklovskii Elected to NAS
MSI PI Boris Shklovskii (professor, Physics and Astronomy) has been elected to membership of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. Professor Shklovskii uses resources at MSI for calculations related to the study of the quantum mechanics of dissipative systems.
A New Diagnostic Technique to Diagnose Neurodegenerative Diseases
MSI PIs Sang-Hyun Oh (professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Peter Larsen (assistant professor, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) and their colleagues have developed a new diagnostic technique that can be used to detect neurodegenerative diseases more quickly and accurately.
MSI PIs Named 2023 McKnight Presidential Fellows
The University of Minnesota recently announced the new McKnight Presidential Fellows. Three MSI PIs are included in the 2023 class. The McKnight Presidential Fellows program is a three-year award given to faculty who have been newly granted tenure and promotion to associate professor. The award is based on excellence in research and scholarship, leadership, potential to build top-tier programs, and ability to advance U of M priorities. The MSI PIs on the list are:
NSF Grant Funds Study of AI Recommender Systems
The U of M will lead a $2M NSF grant developing a system to study AI-powered news recommender systems. The grant is part of the NSF’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering Community Research Infrastructure program. The project will develop a shared news recommender system that will allow researchers to carry out research into users of AI recommender systems.
MSI PIs Use Webb Telescope Data
U of M researchers, including MSI PIs Patrick Kelly (assistant professor, Physics and Astronomy; Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics) and Claudia Scarlata (associate professor, Physics and Astronomy; Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics), led a team that has used data from the new James Webb Telescope to discover a small galaxy that generated stars at an extremely high rat
May 2023 Maintenance
On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. MSI’s storage, compute clusters, and front-end servers will be unavailable for some portion of the day. A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on May 3. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on May 3 held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status. Projects that utilize Stratus VMs will lose connectivity to those VMs for approximately one hour at some point during this maintenance period.
