MSI PIs are among the co-leaders of two projects that recently received grants totaling $26 million from the National Institutes of Health.
MSI PI Linda Kinkel (professor, Plant Pathology) is the chief scientific officer for a new U of M startup called Jord Bioscience. The startup is based on Professor Kinkel’s research, which seeks to develop microbes that can be used instead of chemical pesticides to produce healthier and more productive crops.
MSI PI Jeannine Cavender-Bares (professor, Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior) is featured in on the OVPR Inquiry blog in a story about her research into using spectroscopy to find trees affected with oak wilt, a devastating fungal disease. The disease kills hundreds of thousands of environmentally beneficial oak trees every year. The Cavender-Bares group and their collaborators are studying hyperspectral imaging, a form of spectroscopy that uses electromagnetic radiation reflecting off given materials.
The University of Minnesota is part of a climate modeling center that aims to improve climate modeling and prepare for the disruptions that will occur as the climate changes. MSI PI Vipin Kumar (Regents Professor, Computer Science and Engineering) is part of the team at the U of M that will use big data and artificial intelligence to create more precise models.
MSI PI Craig Packer (professor, Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; Director, Lion Research Center) and colleagues from several other institutions recently published research showing that increased lifespans are a result of better environments - public health and nutrition - and not a slowing of the aging process. The researchers show that there are strong constraints that resist changing the natural rate of aging.
MSI PI Angela Panoskaltsis-Mortari (professor, Pediatrics; Director, 3D Bioprinting Facility) is interviewed in the Fall 2021 issue of Discovery magazine, a publication of the University of Minnesota Foundation. Professor Panoskaltsis-Mortari discusses medical uses for 3D printing: Next-Generation Science.
On Wednesday, October 6, 2021, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. Primary Storage, Mesabi, and Mangi will be unavailable throughout much of the day.
A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on October 6. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on October 6 will be held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status.
The Office of the Vice President for Research has created a new program to celebrate the impact of University of Minnesota research. The Innovation Impact Case Award will recognize research that has had impact outside academia and that benefits individuals, organizations, and communities. The $10,000 award, which will go to two individuals or teams, is open to University of Minnesota System researchers in all disciplines.
