On Wednesday, March 4, 2020, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrade to various MSI systems. Primary Storage, Mesabi, and Mangi will be unavailable throughout much of the day.
A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on March 4. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on March 4 will be held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status.March maintenance will include:
MSI PI Daniel Harki (associate professor, Medicinal Chemistry) has been awarded a Northrop Professorship. This award is made in recognition of “field-shaping faculty who have made significant advances in their careers and whose national and international work has helped define the trajectory of one or more academic fields” (from the Provost’s letter of appointment).
Each year, the University of Minnesota presents the Morse-Alumni and Graduate and Professional teaching awards to recognize faculty who are committed to ongoing improvement of teaching and learning. Morse-Alumni awards recognize outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. The Graduate and Professional teaching awards recognize faculty in graduate and/or professional education.
Five MSI PIs have received awards for 2019-20.
Horace A. Morse – University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education
MSI PI Graham Candler (professor, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics) has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. This is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to an engineer. This year’s honorees will be inducted into the Academy at their annual meeting in October.
Two MSI PIs are investigators on a project that has received a grant from the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics. The project will develop an implantable magnetic nanodevice array that will generate magnetic fields to treat a variety of neurological disorders. MSI PI Jian-Ping Wang (professor, Electric and Computer Engineering) is a co-PI on the project; the other co-PI is Professor Kendall Lee of the Mayo Clinic.
Six MSI PIs are among the ten faculty members who have been named as the 2020-22 McKnight Land-Grant Professors. Recipients hold the designation “McKnight Land-Grant Professor” for two years, and receive $25,000 each year to support their research/scholarly work. The goal of the program is to advance the careers of assistant professors at a crucial point in their professional lives.

MSI PI Georgios Giannakis (professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering; director, Digital Technology Center (DTC)) has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).
