Three MSI researchers, C. Daniel Frisbie (CEMS), Claudia Schmidt-Dannert (BMBB), and Jian-Ping Wang (ECE) have received 2012 Distinguished McKnight Professorships. This program recognizes outstanding mid-career faculty at the University of Minnesota. Recipients receive the title of Distinguished McKnight Professor, which they retain for as long as they stay at the University of Minnesota, plus a five-year, $100,000 grant.
MSI Principal Investigator Dan Keefe’s work at the LMVL is highlighted in the OVPR’s Research blog. Work on virtual-reality modeling of medical devices by members of Professor Keefe's research group was highlighted in the Fall 2010 MSI Research Bulletin. MSI PI Robert Zink (Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior) is highlighted in a story on the College of Biological Science website. Professor Zink uses his combined expertise in ornithology and outdoor sports to communicate with the non-scientific public in periodicals aimed at outdoor sports enthusiasts.

The MSI Research Informatics Support Systems (RISS) program is hosting a Meet and Greet on March 22, 2012. The event will take place on the fourth floor of Walter Library, 1:00-3:00. Members of the University research community are invited to meet the RISS staff and learn about MSI's informatics resources. Light refreshments will be served.
MSI will host a Research Exhibition on April 13, 2012. Visitors will be able to talk to MSI researchers and see posters of their work. Light refreshments will be served. Information can be found on the event website.
MSI regrets to announce that the 2012 REU program was not funded, and therefore we have had to cancel it. We hope to be able to hold a program in Summer 2013. We will post information on our website in Fall 2012.
Ken Chen, a graduate student in Alexander Heger’s (Physics and Astronomy; MSI Fellow) group, has been awarded the Stanwood Johnston Fellowship for 2012-13. Mr. Chen was the Grand Prize winner at the 2011 MSI Research Exhibition and an article about his research appeared in the Spring 2011 Research Bulletin.
A 2001 MSI summer undergraduate intern, Zack Garbow, is the co-founder of a company that provides web-based technologies to the funeral industry. Mr. Garbow was an MSI intern in the group of MSI Fellow David Yuen (Earth Sciences) and worked with Professor Yuen’s group until 2004. A description of Mr. Garbow’s internship project appears in the Winter 2002 Research Bulletin.
MSI PI Nikos Papanikolopoulos (Computer Science and Engineering) was featured on the Big Ten Network’s “Impact the Future” program on February 28. This show highlighted Professor Papanikolopoulos's work with robots for the military. More information about Professor Pananikolopoulos’s work can be found on UMNews.
MSI Associate Fellow Tim Griffin (BMBB) and his colleagues are featured in a UMNews story about research that may result in a simple saliva test for cancer. Professor Griffin uses MSI resources for proteomic analysis.
MSI Principal Investigator Dan Keefe (Computer Science and Engineering) is one of the McKnight Land-Grant Professorship awardees for 2012-14. Information about Professor Keefe’s research can be found at the OVPR website.
MSI PI Michael Travisano (Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior) is the lead author on a paper about how multicellular organisms developed, published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. On Saturday, January 28, MSI participated in the Science Museum of Minnesota’s Amantes de la Ciencia, an annual event designed to introduce visitors to science and education professionals in the Latino/a community. Visitors to the MSI booth got to build molecules with marshmallows and pretzels and see how researchers make molecule simulations on a computer.
A video presentation by Fotis Sotiropoulos (MSI Fellow) and Trung Le of St. Anthony Falls Laboratory and Daniel Keefe (MSI Principal Investigator) and Dane Coffey of Computer Science and Engineering won a prestigious award at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Fluid Mechanics.
