MSI PI Roger Ruan, a professor in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). The ASABE is an international professional association for professionals specializing in sustainable solutions to population growth.
Professor Ruan uses MSI to support research into using scum as a source of lipids to create biodiesel.
The Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) has presented MSI Robert Stupar with their Outstanding Young Crop Scientist Award. Stupar is an associate professor on the faculty in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics. The CSSA is an international scientific society that advances a number of disciplines of crop science.
Professor Stupar uses MSI for various next-generation sequencing projects involving soybeans and barley.
Professor Shri Ramaswamy, MSI PI and Head of the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). AIChE is the world’s leading organization for chemical engineering professionals.
The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) has published a list of patents that have been awarded to University researchers during the past few months. Several MSI Principal Investigators, shown below, are on this list. The complete list can be found on the OVPR's Inquiry blog post, "Patent roll call, fall 2015."
The research of MSI PI George Weiblen has been in the news lately – both New Yorker magazine and the UK newspaper The Guardian have run articles that discuss his research. Professor Weiblen, a faculty member in the Department of Plant Biology and interim science director of the Bell Museum of Natural History, has been studying the forests of Papua New Guinea for many years.
Two MSI Principal Investigators were co-leads on a study that shows how temperatures can vary from cities to surrounding areas with less pavement and cement. The researchers, Peter Snyder and Tracy Twine, are both associate professors in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate.
The Users Bulletin provides a summary of new policies, procedures, and events of interest to MSI users. It is published quarterly.

On November 21, 2015, MSI participated in the College of Science and Engineering's annual Math and Science Family Fun Fair. Over 1,500 people attended this year's event. The Fun Fair allows participants to learn about math and science in a fun, hands-on way. People who visited MSI's table got to build a model of a molecule, either salt or methane, from gumdrops and toothpicks. They could then put on 3D glasses and see how scientists build models using computers.
Three MSI PIs were among the U of M faculty who received Fall 2015 Mini Grants from the Institute on the Environment. The grants are awarded to interdisciplinary projects that focus on environmental themes. Besides funding, the award includes space for workshops, meetings, and conferences and some administrative support for a year.
The MSI PIs who received Mini Grants are:
