MSI PI Georgios Giannakis (professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering; director, Digital Technology Center (DTC)) has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). This is the highest professional honor given to academic inventors and recognizes “a spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society” (from the NAI website). Professor Giannakis will be inducted into the NAI during the organization’s annual meeting in April.

A story about this award and Professor Giannakis’s work can be found on the College of Science and Engineering website: Professor Georgios Giannakis to be Inducted Into the National Academy of Inventors. A complete list of this year’s Fellows is on the NAI website: National Academy of Inventors Announces 2019 Fellows.

Professor Giannakis also won the 2019 IEEE SP Norbert Wiener Society Award. This award recognizes “fundamental contributions to statistical signal processing, especially for networking and communications, and for outstanding mentoring of young researchers” (from the award citation). An article about this award appears on the DTC website: Georgios B. Giannakis, Endowed Professor of ECE and Director of DTC won the 2019 IEEE SP Norbert Wiener Society Award.

Professor Giannakis uses MSI for research into large-scale machine learning, sparsity in signals and systems, wireless cognitive radios, mobile ad hoc networks, wireless sensors, renewable energy, power grids, and gene-regulatory, brain, and social networks.
