Using Filtration Devices for Safer Dental Procedures

COVID-19

Two MSI PIs from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Regents Professor David Pui and Associate Professor Jiarong Hong, led a new study that demonstrated the use of filtration devices to mitigate the spread of aerosols during dental procedures. The study was published in the Journal of the American Dental Association. A story about this research, including a video showing one of the filtration devices in use, can be found on the University of Minnesota News site: Filtration Devices Could Make Dentist Appointments Safer During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Regents Professor Pui uses MSI resources for research being performed at the Center for Filtration Research and the Particle Technology Laboratory. Professor Hong uses MSI resources for computational studies in projects involving flow field imaging; as well as image processing, these studies also involve machine learning.
