This group is involved in multiscale fluid field investigations as well as flow structure interactions ranging from super-large scales of a utility scale turbine to flow around swimming microorganisms. They use image-based techniques like PIV and specifically Holographic PIV to investigate these problems, which involves a great deal of image processing. They also use machine learning techniques including YOLO and U-net to help processing the real holograms and the synthetic images in order to reach a higher accuracy level. Finally, they are working on using state-of-art machine learning algorithms to build an advanced detection system related to environmental science and biomechanical science. They are complementing these studies with computational studies that can both validate results as well as provide intersting avenues and hypotheses to test experimentally.
