Increasing Childhood Cancer Rates

Medicine

Research by MSI PIs from the Department of Pediatrics and the Masonic Cancer Center, Professor Logan Spector, Assistant Professor Erin Marcotte, and Associate Professor Jenny Poynter, has shown that the rates for 11 pediatric cancers increased worldwide during the period 1988 - 2012. The study used data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization. It was published in the journal JNCI Cancer Spectrum. This study is featured in a University of Minnesota Research Brief: Cancer Rates in Young Children Are Increasing Worldwide.

The research was also covered on the Minneapolis/St. Paul CBS affiliate, WCCO-TV: Study: Cancer Rates in Young Children Are Increasing Worldwide. The study can be found on the journal website: Trends in International Incidence of Pediatric Cancers in Children Under 5 Years of Age: 1988 - 2012.
