MSI PI Richard James (professor, Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics) is a co-author on a paper that describes the path to developing a new form of ceramic with shape memory. The authors included researchers from the University of Minnesota and Kiel University in Germany. The paper appears in the journal Nature: Exploding and Weeping Ceramics.
A story about the research, including videos of the behavior of different materials, can be found on the University of Minnesota News site: Exploding and Weeping Ceramics Provide Path to New Shape-Shifting Material.
Professor James uses MSI for several projects that develop rigorous, mathematically based computational methods that support investigations of materials that exhibit extraordinary behavior.
