Three MSI PIs Named IEEE Fellows

Three MSI PIs from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering have been named Fellows of the IEEE. They are:

• Maria Gini: Professor Gini studies a variety of problems in artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems. The Gini group’s current project involves using deep learning methods to extract information from videos of the interactions of toddlers with a small humanoid robot. The interactions are part of a session designed to assess potential developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, of children.
• Tian He: Professor He is using MSI for computing modeling in a project to improve metropolitan-scale transportation systems. New urban information infrastructure enables the group to model behaviors of urban transportation systems with massive multi-modal online feeds and to apply effective local and global cyber-control.
• George Karypis: Professor Karypis uses MSI for a number of projects that span the fields of high-performance computing, recommender systems, and learning analytics. Current projects use high-performance computing resources to design and implementation algorithms for analyzing large scale datasets that arise in machine learning tasks, to design and develop algorithms to improve the quality of recommendations served to a user of the system, and development of predictive models that will help students make informed decisions about which courses to register for and help them with course sequencing.
