MSI PI Boris Shklovskii (professor, Physics and Astronomy) has been elected to membership of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Membership in this organization is one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. Professor Shklovskii uses resources at MSI for calculations related to the study of the quantum mechanics of dissipative systems.
MSI PIs Sang-Hyun Oh (professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Peter Larsen (assistant professor, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) and their colleagues have developed a new diagnostic technique that can be used to detect neurodegenerative diseases more quickly and accurately.
The University of Minnesota recently announced the new McKnight Presidential Fellows. Three MSI PIs are included in the 2023 class. The McKnight Presidential Fellows program is a three-year award given to faculty who have been newly granted tenure and promotion to associate professor. The award is based on excellence in research and scholarship, leadership, potential to build top-tier programs, and ability to advance U of M priorities. The MSI PIs on the list are:
The U of M will lead a $2M NSF grant developing a system to study AI-powered news recommender systems. The grant is part of the NSF’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering Community Research Infrastructure program. The project will develop a shared news recommender system that will allow researchers to carry out research into users of AI recommender systems.
U of M researchers, including MSI PIs Patrick Kelly (assistant professor, Physics and Astronomy; Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics) and Claudia Scarlata (associate professor, Physics and Astronomy; Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics), led a team that has used data from the new James Webb Telescope to discover a small galaxy that generated stars at an extremely high rat
On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. MSI’s storage, compute clusters, and front-end servers will be unavailable for some portion of the day. A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on May 3. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on May 3 held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status. Projects that utilize Stratus VMs will lose connectivity to those VMs for approximately one hour at some point during this maintenance period.
The University of Minnesota has received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to establish an Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center. A $10 million grant is being spread across six states to establish “one-stop shops” for rural, tribal, and underserved communities to get assistance accessing federal funding for energy and environmental improvement efforts. The U of M’s center will cover Minnesota and five other states.
MSI PI Fang Li (professor, Pharmacology; co-Principal Investigator, Midwest Antiviral Drug Discovery Center) has been named a Healthcare Hero by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
MSI PIs Colin DeYoung (associate professor, Psychology) and Nicola Grissom (assistant professor, Psychology) have both received CLA Brain Imaging Grants for Spring 2023. These grants can be used for seed funding for projects or to purchase items for ongoing infrastructure needs.
In research published in February 2023, MSI PI Jian-Ping Wang (professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering) and colleagues at the U of M and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have created a new process for making spintronic devices. These devices are critical to the manufacture of semiconductor chips, which are necessary for consumer goods, including smartphones, cars, computers, and many other electronics.
The 2023 Research Computing Exhibition will be held on Tuesday, April 25. The Exhibition includes a panel discussion about employment in high-performance computing, presentations about Research Computing, tours of the machine room, visualizations in the Viz Lab, and a judged poster session. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to all.
Rare Disease Day was observed on February 28 in the medical community. The purpose of the day is to generate discussion about rare diseases, the people affected by them, and healthcare systems that treat them.
On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, MSI staff will perform scheduled maintenance and upgrades to various MSI systems. MSI’s storage, compute clusters, and front-end servers will be unavailable for some portion of the day. A global system reservation will start at 5:00 a.m. on April 5. Jobs that cannot be completed before 5:00 a.m. on April 5 held until after maintenance and then started once the system returns to production status.
MSI PI Vipin Kumar (Regents Professor, Computer Science and Engineering; Institute for Engineering in Medicine) is one of the 2023 Fellows of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The AAAI is a society that advances and promotes research in, and responsible use of, artificial intelligence.
MSI PI Peter Larsen (assistant professor, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences) and Assistant Professor Jon Oliver (Environmental Health Sciences) are co-PIs on a grant from the National Institutes of Health that will study the transmission tick-borne pathogens such as Lyme disease.
In a story about the discipline of academic medicine, the U of M Medical School’s monthly feature “Where Discovery Creates Hope” describes the work of MSI PI Melena Bellin (professor, Pediatrics). Academic medicine combines both research and teaching. Professor Bellin uses MSI resources for research into islet transplantation as a treatment for diabetes.
MSI PI Ambika Bhagi-Damodaran (assistant professor, Chemistry) has received a 2023 Cottrell Scholar Award. These awards, which are presented to early-career researchers in the U.S. and Canada, are given by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement to honor outstanding teacher-scholars in the fields of chemistry, physics, and astronomy.
Two MSI PIs have been named Distinguished McKnight University Professors. This program recognizes outstanding mid-career faculty members who have recently achieved full professor status. The MSI PIs on the list are:
African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly contagious, devastating disease in pigs. In one of the few facilities allowed to work on the virus in the U.S., Professor Gerald Shurson (Animal Science) and MSI PI Declan Schroeder (associate professor, Veterinary Population Medicine) led the research team that compared ASFV and a surrogate virus, Emiliania huxleyi (EhV).
The Minnesota Invasive Terrestrial Pests and Plants Center (MITPPC) has announced ten new projects to investigate some of the serious invasive species causing environmental and economic harm to Minnesota. Five of these projects are being led by MSI PIs. This research will improve how Minnesota can detect and manage invasive species. The projects are funded by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. Projects led by MSI PIs are:
