Two MSI PIs, Professor Nikolaos Papanikolopoulos (Computer Science and Engineering) and Professor Nathan Springer (Plant Biology) have been named McKnight Presidential Endowed Professors by the University of Minnesota. This is one of the University’s highest honors.
Professor Papanikolopoulos uses MSI’s supercomputers for research into using sparse coding for fast approximate nearest neighbors (NN). NN is a fundamental problem in computer science and is used as a core algorithmic component in computer vision applications such as image search, visual surveillance, image registration, and others. An article about Professor Papanikolopoulos appears on the Computer Science and Engineering website.
Professor Springer uses MSI to support genomics research into the molecular sources of phenotype variation. The Springer lab uses software available through MSI for data analysis and visualizations. An article about Professor Springer is on the College of Biological Sciences website.
