Three MSI PIs are among the six University faculty members who have been named Distinguished McKnight University Professors for 2017. They are:
- Reuben Harris (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics; Masonic Cancer Center; Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator)
- Monica Luciana (Psychology)
- Theresa Reineke (Chemistry)

Professor Harris uses MSI to study the DNA cytosine deaminase APOBEC3B and related compounds and how they are involved in the development of cancer. Professor Luciana uses high-resolution MRI scans to study how the brains of adolescents develop, especially when the individuals begin to use alcohol and other drugs. Professor Reineke is developing polymeric materials for gene and drug delivery, as well as synthesizing and characterizing sustainable materials.
