Parkinson’s Disease and Aging

Medicine

MSI PI Laura Niedernhofer (professor, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics; director, Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism) leads one of four labs that will collaborate on a $6.2 million study to define the links between aging and Parkinson’s disease. The grant was awarded by the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s initiative. The participating labs are from the University of Minnesota Medical School (the second U of M lab is headed by Professor Michael Lee, Neuroscience) and the Van Andel Institute. An article about the grant and the upcoming study can be found on the Medical School website: University of Minnesota, Van Andel Institute Earn $6M to Study Aging’s Role in Parkinson’s.

Professor Niedernhofer uses MSI resources to support research into the fundamental mechanisms of aging and the development of therapeutic treatments that will target and fight these processes.
