Several MSI PIs in the University of Minnesota Medical School and their colleagues have developed two new rapid diagnostic tests for COVID-19. The work was recently published in the journal Bioengineering. One test is a diagnostic test that can differentiate between COVID-19 variants. The other allows researchers to analyze the same sample for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms. The technology for both tests uses the CRISPR/Cas9 system. A story about this research appears on the Medical School website: University of Minnesota Medical School Researchers Develop Two New Rapid COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests.
The MSI PIs on the paper include:
- Mark Osborn (assistant professor; Pediatrics) - Professor Osborn was the lead author on the paper.
- Professor Osborn uses resources available through MSI for genetic/genomic research to develop potential therapeutic approaches to treat genetic disorders.
- Clifford Steer (professor, Medicine)
- Professor Steer uses MSI to support research into the development of a stem cell-based approach for generating non-human primate livers in pigs
- Bruce Blazar (Associate VP for CTSP; Pediatrics)
- Professor Blazar uses MSI resources for several projects relating to the immunology of transplantation.
- Jakub Tolar (Dean, Medical School)
- Dean Tolar uses RNA-sequencing software available through MSI as part of research into developing treatments for Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa.
