MSI PI Jian-Ping Wang (Electrical and Computer Engineering) will be the director of a new center that will focus on novel materials for advanced computing systems. The new Center for Spintronic Materials in Advanced Information Technologies (SMART) will be housed in the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University, Georgetown University , and the University of Maryland will also be a part of the center.

An article about SMART appears on the CSE News site: New Research Center Based in Minnesota to Explore Spintronics Materials for Advanced Computing.

Professor Wang is currently using MSI resources on a project to study and design new iron nitride magnets.
