MSI PIs Receive Grants From Minnesota Partnership

Medicine

Two MSI PIs are among the University faculty who recently received grants from the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics. The Partnership is a collaboration between the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, and the State of Minnesota that supports biotechnology and biomedical research. The projects receiving grants include researchers from the University and Mayo. These grants support collaborative projects that could transform the treatment of diseases that affect Minnesotans.

The PIs receiving awards are:

  • Associate Professor Lynne Bemis (Biomedical Sciences, UMD Medical School); Dr. Gregory Worrell, Mayo Clinic collaborator
    • Project Title: Astrocyte-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Epilepsy Promoters, Repressors and Brain Stimulation
    • Professor Bemis uses MSI for a project that aims to identify extracelluar RNAs and to use sequencing techniques to assess their content and impact.
  • Assistant Professor Ran Blekhman(Genetics, Cell Biology and Development); Dr. Khashayarsha Khazaie, Mayo Clinic collaborator
    • Title: Development of Personalized Microbiome-Based Treatment for Colorectal Cancer
    • Professor Blekhman uses MSI to study the genomics of host-microbiome interactions, using high-throughput genomics technologies and a number of computational approaches.

An article showing a complete list of the grant awardees and descriptions of the projects can be found on the U’s News website: Minnesota Partnership Awards Five New Research Grants for Collaborative Projects.
