Two MSI PIs have been elected to as Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The AAAS, which is one of the most prestigious honor societies in the U.S., recognizes leaders in academia, the arts, business, and public affairs. The 2020 inductees will be honored at a ceremony in October 2020.
The MSI PIs on the list are:
- Jeannine Cavender-Bares (professor, Ecology, Evolution and Behavior)
- Professor Cavender-Bares uses MSI resources to study spectral reflectance data of plants at multiple scales, and link them to the plants’ functional traits in an evolutionary context. the goal is to develop better methods for remotely sensing many dimensions of plant biodiversity, including functional, genotypic, and phylogenetic measures of diversity.
- Laura Gagliardi (professor, Chemistry; Director, Chemical Theory Center; Director, Inorganometallic Catalyst Design Center; Nanoporous Materials Genome Center)
- Professor Gagliardi uses quantum chemical methods to study chemical systems and materials containing transition metals and heavier atoms such as lanthanides and actinides. The Gagliardi group uses various software packages available through MSI. Their work was featured on the MSI website in October 2016: A New Method for Creating a Catalyst on a Metal-Organic Framework.
An article about all the U of M’s honorees appears on the UMN News website: Five U of M Faculty Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
