A recent post in the OVPR’s Inquiry blog describes the U’s participation in citizen-science projects, including its own citizen-science initiative, Zooniverse@UMN. MSI Principal Investigator Lucy Fortson (Physics and Astronomy) heads the initiative.
MSI has assisted with two Zooniverse projects at the U. These were Snapshot Serengeti, which used inputs from participants to classify wildlife pictured by camera traps in Africa, and Ancient Lives, which sought to translate ancient papyri from the Egyptian town of Oxyrhynchus.
An upcoming project by the Bell Museum will log information about the museum’s specimens, many of which were collected over 100 years ago, into their digital database. MSI assisted with the creation of the online Biodiversity Atlas, which launched in May 2016.
