Improving Minnesota Strawberries

Agriculture

Researchers at the U of M’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) have been working for 50 years to improve Minnesota’s strawberry crops. Strawberries are a very popular fruit nationwide and can be a valuable source of income for farmers. MSI PI James Luby (professor, Horticultural Science) is part of this research, which has developed varieties that can be grown in Minnesota and can thrive in the state’s changing climate. A story about this research is featured in the Spring 2023 issue of the CFANS magazine, Impact: The Science of Minnesota Strawberries.

Professor Luby uses MSI for genetics research supporting the development of new fruit-crop varieties, including apples, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries.
