Professor William Arnold, an MSI Principal Investigator in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering, is the lead researcher on a recently published study of water contaminants. The study involved a multinational team led by the University of Minnesota.
The study, published in the journal PLoS One, studied hydrolated polyborminated diphenyl ethers, which are naturally occurring chemicals that are toxic and homone-disrupting to marine mammals. This study suggests that human impacts on nutrient levels or other water-quality changes may be causing a growth in production of these chemicals.
