The overall focus of this research group aims to understand and enhance the management of human dominated landscapes that include a spectrum of urban wildland interface environments. This research is based on integrating knowledge of geographic and environmental risk and hazard processes in the landscape with the social, economic, and biophysical aspects of the landscape. This broad scale approach also provides research opportunities to diverse student populations.
The following are two example questions in the fields of fire risk and hazard research: To what extent are the changing frequency and intensity of fire severity pattern influenced by wildland-urban interface? And, How will climate change influence the spatial distribution fire occurrence, cessation, and severity in the pacific Northwest?
