Project Title:
Critical Zone Science of Mountain Smallholder Farming
Smallholder farmers produce most of the food in developing countries, accounting for 20-34% of the world's food supply. Many of them overlap with the 1.1 billion people who live on steep hills and mountains. These researchers are working to improve the fundamental understanding of the mountain critical zone, a vertical zone of the earth between the tree canopy and groundwater, as the basis for the livelihoods of the world's smallholder farmers. A significant component of this project depends on extensive mapping of publicly available global datasets relevant to mounting farming. MSI resources are used primarily for mapping and data processing.
