Project Title:
Predicting Contaminant Fate in Aquatic Systems
Various chemicals, including solvents, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, are unintentionally and intentionally released into natural and engineered aquatic systems. Processes including hydrolysis, sorption, oxidation/reduction, and photolysis will affect the persistence of these chemicals. This research seeks to quantify these processes to understand the fate of pollutants in natural systems and to design engineered systems to remove them. Computational chemistry approaches are used to predict reaction rates and understand observed reaction products. This includes thermodynamic calculations to assess bond energies and predictions of NMR specta to help identify (fluorinated) reaction products.
