The Particle Technology Laboratory is well-known for its instrumentation development activities. Instruments for particle generation, measurement, sampling and analysis in the 0.002 to 100 μm diameter range; and microscopes, electron microbalances, gas analyzers, and anemometry are all available in the laboratory. Recent developments include a Nanometer Differential Mobility Analyzer for size distribution measurements in the 3 to 100 nm diameter range, an Electrospray Aerosol Generator for producing monodisperse nanoparticles larger than 2nm and carbon nanotubes, a Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM) for measuring the nanoparticle surface area deposited in the human lung, a Universal NanoParticle Analyzer (UNPA) for measuring nanoparticle agglomerates, aerosol generators for producing silver, silica and titanium dioxide nanoparticle agglomerates, and a calibration system for the low-cost sensors.
The Center for Filtration Research (CFR) consists of 20 international leading filter manufacturers. The CFR performs numerical modeling and develops test methods to study air and water filtration to mitigate airborne and liquid-borne pollutants.
This research was featured on the MSI website in August 2018: Modeling an Air-Pollution Filtration System.
