Project Title:
High Resolution Climate Modeling at Multiple Scales Across the Upper Midwest

These researchers are working on four projects using MSI:

  • Updating their 10 km resolution dynamically downscaled climate data across the state of Minnesota to 4 km using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model
  • Analyzing historic and project future climate conditions over turfgrass on golf courses in northern regions (across the northern states of the U.S. and Norway)
  • Using the WRF model to simulate the urban region surrounding the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area at 30m resolution, in order to evaluate potential urban heat mitigation strategies (i.e., if all roofs were "white roofs" how might this cool the Metro Area?")
  • Examining how climate change might impact the 1854 Treaty Region of Minnesota, particularly lake water temperatures; the researchers will include a lake model into WRF capable of simulating temperature at various lake depths

Research by this group was featured on the MSI website in November 2022: Impacts of Global Climate Change on Minnesota.
