Project Title:
Modeling and Simulation of Reacting and Multiphase Flows
This group conducts research centered on the multi-physics and multi-scale modeling and numerical simulation (CFD) of turbulent reacting/multiphase flows (spanning combustion, plasma, particulate and multiphase flows, and hypersonics) in propulsion and energy systems (e.g., diesel engines, gas-turbine jet engines, scramjets, liquid rocket engines, detonation engines/tubes, chemical reactors, and hypersonic boost-glide vehicles).
Current projects include:
- High-pressure liquid-fueled propulsion power for high efficiency
- Plasma/catalysis-assisted combustion and fuel reforming/gas conversion toward zero emission
- Hypersonic air-breathing propulsion aerodynamics: supersonic combustion, detonation, hypersonic sonic boom
- Multi-fidelity digital twin physics-integrated machine learning modeling of reacting/multiphase flows for the feed-forward control of propulsion power systems
- Particles in combustion emission (e.g., soot) and nanomaterial synthesis (e.g., TiO2)
Research by this group was featured on the MSI website in June 2023: Computational Model to Predict Nitrogen Oxides.
