Barley, Oat, and Silphium Breeding and Genetics

These researchers are investigating the genetics of numerous traits in barley, silphium, and oat. Much of this work involves construction of genetic linkage maps with molecular markers using experimental mapping populations. Current quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping studies focus on disease resistance genes, genes that contribute to yield and agronomic performance, and genes that are involved in malting quality. The researchers are also investigating the use of mixed models to detect marker-trait associations using breeding germplasm. They have been using genotyping by sequencing to generate allele calls for large numbers of SNP markers in breeding populations, association mapping populations, and genomic selection training populations. They are also conducting simulation studies to understand various approaches to using markers in breeding.
