The focus of this research is describing material deformation in angioplasty (balloon expansion of arteries) and deformation and removal of material in atherectomy (mechanical removal of plaque from arteries). Simulations of these processes are being used to quantitatively describe the extent and location of changes in artery mechanical properties due to the procedures. The intent is to characterize beneficial and deleterious changes in artery structure and properties subjected to the mechanical loading. Results will be directly useful in the design of improved and new medical devices and in more efficient control and operation of treatment procedures. The group is performing physical experiments in conjunction with the numerical modeling studies.
